The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
