Fresh analysis reveals that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts believe the way of the drugs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle support.
