The Trump movement's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – came earlier this autumn. Over the span of a few weeks, the nation's leader started showing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room double the dimensions compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and growing, and recently research forecast his energy policies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have dared – truly, no other president would have imagined – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the planet' to 'the meek shall die from cholera'
As confusing as it is to observe the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept regarding democracy and substitute it with its complete opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts close to half – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of compassion into a symbol of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in scripture; this change developed more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
So let me first describe the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or nones. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.
